Where the Universe Glows

Nebulae are enormous clouds of gas and dust that can be nurseries for stars, archives of stellar death and spectacular laboratories of cosmic chemistry.

The word nebula simply means cloud, but astronomical nebulae are structures on staggering scales. Some extend across dozens or hundreds of light-years. They contain hydrogen, helium, dust grains and heavier elements released by earlier generations of stars.

A nebula can be both a birthplace and a graveyard: some contain newborn stars while others are shaped by stars approaching the end of their lives.

Why some nebulae shine

Emission nebulae glow when energetic ultraviolet radiation from nearby hot stars strips electrons from atoms in the gas. When the electrons recombine, the atoms emit light at characteristic wavelengths. Hydrogen is especially important, producing the familiar red-pink emission seen in many astronomical images.

Reflection and darkness

Not every bright-looking nebula produces its own light. Reflection nebulae scatter light from nearby stars, often giving them a bluish appearance. Dark nebulae contain dense dust that blocks background starlight, creating dramatic silhouettes against brighter regions.

Stellar nurseries

Dense parts of molecular clouds can collapse under gravity and form protostars. Young stars then reshape their surroundings through radiation, winds and outflows. The process can compress nearby gas while also dispersing other material, influencing whether additional stars can form.

The remains of dying stars

Some nebulae mark the final stages of stellar evolution. Planetary nebulae form when Sun-like stars shed their outer layers, while supernova remnants are expanding shells of gas produced by stellar explosions. These structures carry newly forged and processed elements back into interstellar space.

Seen together, nebulae reveal that the space between stars is not empty. It is an active medium where matter is illuminated, compressed, enriched and recycled.
