The Architecture of a Galaxy
Galaxies can look delicate in photographs. Their underlying structure is anything but simple.
A galaxy is not simply a collection of stars. It is a gravitational system containing stars, gas, dust, stellar remnants and a large dark-matter component that cannot be seen directly with ordinary light.
Spiral galaxies
In a spiral galaxy, the bright disc contains stars, gas and dust, while spiral arms trace regions where star formation can be especially active. The Milky Way is a barred spiral, meaning its central stellar structure includes an elongated bar.
Elliptical galaxies
Elliptical galaxies range from small, relatively compact systems to enormous galaxies at the centres of galaxy clusters. Their stars follow more randomised orbits, and many large ellipticals contain comparatively little cold gas available for forming new stars.
The invisible scaffold
Dark matter does not shine, but its gravitational influence appears in observations of galaxy rotation, gravitational lensing and the motions of galaxies within clusters. The visible galaxy sits inside a much larger dark-matter halo.
Galaxies change
Galaxies merge, interact and accrete material. A close encounter can distort spiral arms, compress gas and trigger bursts of star formation. Over very long periods, repeated mergers can substantially alter a galaxy’s shape and stellar population.
The architecture of a galaxy is therefore a snapshot of a dynamic history—not a fixed design.
